White House Salad

I’m not a big TV fan but I do have a weekly date with my favorite show, The Biggest Loser each Tuesday night. I can always be guaranteed a boost in motivation and a good cry each week.  No reason for tears yet in this episode but the cast is in the White House kitchen right now eating a salad picked from the First Family’s garden. It makes me pine for my garden right now and sad that it’s run it’s course for this year. Nothing beats fresh, organic vegetables grown at home!

Just the way I like it

So, we’re in the midst of a deep freeze and the ground has been white for weeks. Not that I’m a particular fan of cold but I AM a fan of SNOW!  I’ve always felt that winter should be white from the December-March and in order to do so, the temperatures need to stay below freezing. We’re expecting a couple of small back to back storms over the next couple of days which is fine with me!

I’ve been out of the online loop a bit but have been trying to get through Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett which I started on the plane trip back from San Diego but hadn’t been able to pick up since. Because it was so long ago, I needed to reread the chapters that I read because I forgot everything.  I’m setting a goal to read at least 2 chapters a day so that I can make it through some time this century!

In the meantime, I’m still trying to find some quiet time (without barking dogs) to get a final Patriotworld podcast posted for this past season. Yes.. it’s VERY weird that our season is already over, but football isn’t. Still, I’m very proud of the team and while sad about missing the playoffs, I’m not grieving like I was last year after the game that shall not be named!

As for me, 2009 is here,  I’m staying home a lot and have a major goal in mind:

Making a vow

Let it snow… :-)

Looking forward to some more snow tonight into tomorrow to add to the ice that we have on the ground already. I’m hoping to hole up inside tomorrow and do some relaxing and maybe even take a nap. I Uttered yesterday about the mini-funk that I’m in and I think some it may relate to not getting enough sleep. I’ve been going to bed early enough but rarely sleep more than an hour or two straight. I’m hoping for a cure soon…

Jake’s wrestling all day today in a tournament so we’ll be heading out there in a bit. I’ll be bringing my knitting and a book since there are lots of teams wrestling and there will be some waiting around between his matches. I’m also working the concession stand for a bit but I’ll go crazy without something to do for all of those hours. Lord knows, I’m sooo behind on all of my reading!

I downloaded Suze Orman’s newest book, 2009 Action Plan,  from Oprah‘s website  and will be reading it via pdf.  It’s available for free until January 15th so grab it NOW! This is the year of really cracking down, with upcoming college expenses and everything else coming down the pike.

It’s a weird feeling without the Pats in the playoffs so football will be on, but it won’t be the same.  I’ll be able to multitask with the games on; something I often do but NEVER when my boys are playing. I’m planning on getting a podcast done soon.. It’s just tough to find quiet time with 3 dogs in the house!

For now, I’m going to eat some steel cut oatmeal with nuts and berries and head out to cheer on my son then watch some movies and drink a little wine tonight. Have a great weekend!  /me is doing the SNOW dance!

NaBloPoMo #28 Wrapping up

Since it’s the day after Thanksgiving and I have the  day off from school, I was hoping to get some extra sleep this morning but still got up around 6:30.  I’m getting a bit sleep deprived because I haven’t gotten much all week. Unfortunately, we have commitments both Saturday and Sunday morning so there won’t be any sleeping in for me.

I did more or less take it pretty easy though which was good.. I had to make a run out to look at Luci’s computer then did a couple of CVS runs to finish off my deals for the week and grab them before the 3 day sale ends.  I ended up spending just $2.66 out of my pocket for a lot of merchandise because I had Extra Care Bucks from earlier purchases.

They are running an unbelievable number of promotions where the item ends up free when the ECBs print. The trick is to use them on the next purchase (and not let them expire!).  It’s even better if you have mfg. coupons because you end up buying it for less than you even get back.  It happened on mostly  everything that I bought tonight! So, I spent $2.66, got all of that stuff and walked out with $29 to use next time!

I also put away all of my glassware, dishes and serving pieces from yesterday. I needed to wait for all of the dishwasher loads were done so that I could put them away together so they would fit.  Tonight, I finally got the Jets tailgate up and posted which I’ve been trying to do for two weeks. But between the holiday and having Sugar added to the mix, her surgery, and my 3 Thanksgiving dinners,  it’s been harder to find the time. Once I get into bed, it’s not always possible to type and/or I’m usually beat by the time I get there.

NaBloPoMo #24 I love Twitter <3

Back to work today and my boys are home from Florida so it’s not an “online night” so I’m making it quick. But, since I’m still going strong with NaBloPoMo, I’m not about to quit now. So.. tonight is short but sweet:

On Friday, I had to restore my old laptop that the kids use because it was no longer booting up. It hadn’t worked in quite awhile but since they were going away, I spent a few hours getting it up and running so they could take it. Tonight, I updated the service packs and needed some anti virus software since the old Norton had expired. A simple tweet asking if there was a preference for Norton or McAfee resulted in immediate responses urging me to NOT pay but to try the free AVG virus software.  Thanks guys!  I installed it, ran it and saved myself $39.95 a year. Perfect… since the laptop will only be used occasionally anyway.

NaBloPoMo #18 Coupon Queens

As mentioned yesterday, here’s a list of some of the new blogs that I’ve subscribed to and have been reading lately. I’m sure that there will be more as one usually leads to another but here’s my start. I’ve done really well and have picked up lots of deals this week. I’ve also gotten the heads up on sales and online coupon opportunities and how to combine them for the best savings.  Tomorrow’s an incredibly busy day for me so this is a shorty for tonight as I’ve got to hit the hay.

NaBloPoMo #17 CVS Rules!

Dollar SignSo, in my quest to turn over a new leaf and do some bargain shopping, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the CVS flyer and my coupons. I’m also making a point to NOT let those Extra Care Bucks  expire before using them. This week, I went in twice and on the first trip, spent $29.85 (after mfg. coupons) and got $25 back in Extra Bucks. Today I went in and spent $32.72 out of pocket after cashing in yesterday’s $25 (but I didn’t have any mfg. coupons) and got another $29 bucks back. I literally got toothpaste, food, sanitary items, dish soap, and a variety of HBA items for almost nothing. Had I had more coupons the discounts would have been even deeper but for some reason, my newspaper doesn’t include the Redplum insert, just the Smartsource one in the Sunday paper.

I’ve recently subscribed to a host of new blogs which I’ll list in tomorrow’s NaBloPoMo. These women have the money saving shopping technique down to a science!  They not only use the regular mfg. coupons but print internet coupons and combine them with in store specials and cash back. It takes a bit of time, but it feels good to get items for next to nothing!
